The meniscus is a layer of cartilage in the knee that has several important functions it helps among other things to absorb shock when walking and running. The meniscus provides also stability to the knee in cooperation with ligaments and tendons. A meniscus that is torn needs often surgery and less severe meniscus tears can take 4–8 weeks to heal. The rehabilitation is often split into 4 phases guided preferably by a therapist or trainer.

This Phase 1 workout is intended to guide the therapist and patients through the post-operative course for a meniscus repair. Remember that any intervention should be based on the individual's needs and consider a proper examination from a professional clinician.

The main goals to achieve during Phase 1 are: 

  • Reduce swelling, minimize pain
  • Restore mobility - specially patella (kneecap)
  • Restore full extension and flexion 
  • Minimize muscle inhibition and re-establish quad control

Different factors may influence the post-operative meniscal repair rehabilitation outcomes, especially the type and location of the meniscal tear and repair. Don't stress throughout the rehabilitation period and consider taking the needed extra time if passing criteria aren't reached under the approximated time scheduled during the actual rehab phase. 

Phase 1 passing criteria after approx. 2 weeks of rehab:

  • Knee extension range of motion (ROM) 0 degrees
  • Knee flexion ROM 90 degrees
  • Quad contraction and full active extension
  • Able to perform straight leg raise without lag.

How to join:
